2011年開始中職首度啟用自由球員制度，近幾年逐次修改規定，目前就是自2003年開始計算，年資滿9年取得自由球員資格，如申請過需再累積4年才獲得第2次資格，聯盟會在球季結束後3日公布名單，球員須在7天不含例假日內宣布是否行使，也就是14日前須做出決定。

    彭政閔目前加盟中職16個年頭，今年打擊率3成41，還是維持在高檔，彭政閔曾在2011年行使過自由球員，當年興農牛開出3年複數年合約，不過彭政閔選擇續留兄弟，今年再次擁有自由球員資格，是否二度行使，成為聯盟第一人，格外受到矚目。
